Our mission is to help people live healthier lives. To ensure that our processes can provide the results you want to maintain a clean and healthy home, we had independent laboratories test our core cleaning methods against some of the most common unhealthy elements found in homes – allergens and bacteria. We’re happy to share those results with you.

Hot Carbonating Extraction Process Makes Homes Healthier

Healthy Home

Our Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) process was tested by a leading independent air quality laboratory in multiple homes. The lab found that we remove an average of 98.1% of common household allergens from carpets and upholstery. The common allergens tested were dog and cat dander and dust mite allergens. Additionally, our HCE process, when coupled with a sanitizer, was found to remove an average of 89% of the airborne bacteria in the home and 82.3% of the bacteria in carpets.

Pet Urine Removal Treatment (P.U.R.T.)

Healthy Home

An independent laboratory also conducted multiple tests of P.U.R.T., our revolutionary process for treating pet urine odors and stains. In tests against the most common odor sources found in dog and cat urine, the study concluded that P.U.R.T. removes an average of 99.9% of pet urine odors from carpets. When coupled with our HCE process and a sanitizer, the study also concluded that P.U.R.T. removes an average of 99.2% of the bacteria from pet urine stains in carpets.

Granite Countertop Renewal

Based on several tests across multiple homes, an independent laboratory found that our Granite Countertop Renewal process, in conjunction with a sanitizer, removes an average of 98.4% of bacteria from granite countertops.

Removing Allergens from Your Home

Many people don’t realize that carpets, rugs and upholstery act as giant air filters for your home, trapping allergens and bacteria and keeping them out of the air we breathe. But just like any air filters, they need to be properly and regularly cleaned to remain optimally effective. All of us, and particularly the 1 in 5 American (roughly 60 million) who suffer from allergies or asthma, are greatly impacted by indoor air quality and the number of allergens and bacteria trapped in our homes that can trigger an attack. Considering that and the fact that we spend an average of 90% of our time indoors, selecting a trusted professional with safe and healthy processes to clean your carpet, upholstery, area rugs, tile & stone, and granite countertops is an important decision and plays a key role in the health of your home and your family.

Removing Bacteria, Improving Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is also a significant home health concern because the average home can harbor as much as 200,000 bacteria for every square inch of carpet. As the bacteria builds up, the bacteria lurking in your carpets gets stirred up and circulates in the air your family is breathing unless you properly clean them. Our carpet cleaning is not only effective at removing the bacteria from the carpets, upholstery and other surfaces we clean, but it also improves the overall air quality in your home.

Healthy Home

At Chem-Dry of Stratford, we want you to breathe easier about the safety of your home and the health of your family. Whether you suffer from allergies or asthma or you just want to provide the healthiest home for your family, our carpet cleaning along with the other services we offer can help you remove the allergens and bacteria hiding in your home and improve your indoor air quality. Because we clean for your health like no one else, contact us to ensure a safe and healthy home environment for your family.

Wrinkled Carpet after Cleaning?

Have you ever wondered why your carpets may wrinkle after they’re cleaned? If not, great! Your carpet is in excellent shape and you don’t need this information…yet.

The technical term for wrinkles is Latex Displacement or Expansion Differential (either term is acceptable). Tufted carpets have 4 layers:

  1. Face Fiber
  2. Primary Backing
  3. Latex Adhesive
  4. Secondary Backing

Each layer of the carpet has a natural absorption rate. The issue starts with that layer of latex adhesive. Latex is water-soluble and will absorb significantly more moisture than the 2 layers it’s sandwiched between. Both backing layers are typically made of polypropylene, which absorbs .025% moisture (virtually nothing). The latex is swelling and has to go somewhere so it manifests itself as wrinkles.

It’s important to understand that moisture absorption is the catalyst for wrinkles appearing but it’s not the cause of the problem. The problem already existed. Carpet cleaners get blamed for wrinkles all the time but they are rarely the actual cause. The good news is that once the latex completely dries it will usually go back to its original wrinkle-free state. These are the actual problems causing the wrinkles:

  1. Latex degradation
  2. Low-quality latex (high filler load)

The latex used in carpet manufacturing is notorious for have a high filler load of calcium carbonate. This causes the latex to go further in the manufacturing process but will shorten the usable life of the carpet. If you pull the carpet back and notice if there are lots of little white crumbs on the cushion.

  1. Improper stretch
  2. Incorrect cushion (too high)
  3. Incorrect or damaged tackstrip
  4. No acclimation of product or installed too cold
  5. Seams and transitions not properly sealed

Improper installation is the most common reason for wrinkles; and not by a little bit. Carpet must be installed using a powerstretcher – that is the rule and there are no exceptions. It must be stretched in the length and the width evenly. Most installers soft stretch the width to minimize seam peak but this causes wrinkling within a short time. Carpet cushion should not exceed 7/16” and should be of high quality. Cushion that is too soft or too tall will allow the backing to overly flex with high traffic. Tackstrip that is old or damaged must be replaced. The pins on tackstrip must also be the right height for the cushion used. Did you even know that carpet should be acclimated to the environment? Installing on a cold day where the carpet sits outside or in a garage will cause it to shrink up. And once in the home at a comfortable 72 degrees + that carpet will relax. Another very common mistake is not sealing the seams or the transitions from wood or tile floors. Any delamination starting at these points will be directly related to installation error.

Environmental & Use Conditions:

  1. High humidity (only when combined with another factor)
  2. Flooding
  3. Improper maintenance
  4. Age of the carpet (it doesn’t last forever folks)
  5. Wrong carpet for the traffic load (unrealistic expectations)

Carpets have a usable life cycle. It’s the homeowner’s job to maintain carpet the right way so that it lasts as long as it can. That includes proper vacuuming, spot cleaning, and hiring the right cleaner to meet manufacturer’s warranties. Not all carpet is made to the same quality level and carpet designed to last 5 years is not going to hold up for 10 years in an active home.

Professional Cleaning:

  1. Overly wet for an extended time period
  2. Specialty spotters reached the backing and dissolved the latex

Can the carpet cleaner be at fault? Yes, it is possible. If the carpets stay wet for too long (and we’re talking days not hours) that can weaken the backing. Also if spotters that are made to dissolve adhesives are used, that can contribute. It’s unlikely that solvent spotter such as these are used throughout an entire room though.

How Often Should I Be Cleaning That?

You know that everything in your house needs to be cleaned, but you might not know how often to be cleaning it. For example, it’s easy to know to wipe off the counter when something spills or they otherwise get dirty, but often should you mop the floor if it’s not visibly dirty? For your convenience, we’ve put together this easy guide that tells you just often you should clean most things in your home that you may be wondering about.

Floors and Walls

Every room in your house has walls and floors that need to be cleaned, so let’s start there.

Your walls need to be about once a month, give or take. If you tend to keep your windows open in the spring and summer, particularly if your area has heavy pollen, cleanings should probably be increased to every week. This will reduce the allergen build up in your home. If you have children with sticky fingers, make sure to do regular spot checks to clean up problem areas before they set in. This may mean quickly wiping down parts of your wall every day. Another thing to pay attention to is cobwebs Remove these as soon as they appear. A broom will do the trick, as will a vacuum with an attachment.

Whether you have hardwood, tile, or carpeted floors, they should each be cleaned about once a week. Sweep and mop hardwood and tile floors weekly, and vacuum your carpets and rugs the same amount. Because a vacuum can’t remove all of the dirt that accumulates in your carpets, it’s recommended that you have a professional carpet cleaning about twice a year. This will remove any built-up dirt or allergens and leave your home cleaner.

Some of the biggest messes in the house happen in the kitchen. Regular cleaning can help this room not get too out of control. Here are a few good rules of thumb. Handle spills immediately, especially if they involve food, and wipe the countertops down every night. Don’t dishes sit in the sink overnight, and wipe down the empty sink every day to prevent bacteria and odors from occurring. Once a month, pour some baking soda and vinegar down the drain and let it sit for a few minutes before flushing out with boiling hot water. This will prevent food particles from accumulating in your drain and stinking up the whole room. If you have a garbage disposal in your sink, cut a lemon and run it down the disposal after cleaning for a fresh scent.

The appliances in your kitchen need to be cleaned regularly as well. Every three months, take everything out of your refrigerator and throw away any expired food. Then wipe up any spills before returning the food. Clean your oven out once or twice a year, in addition to cleaning any major spills when they occur to prevent them from burning in the oven.

Living Room / Den

The biggest source of messes living rooms and dens is clutter from everyday life. To prevent this, make sure that everything where has a home, and always place items in their home as soon as you set them down. If you don’t have a spot to put your mail, it will end up on any surface available and build up. If you have children who aren’t good at cleaning up after themselves, encourage everyone to spend five minutes at the end of the day putting away any stray items like shoes or toys.

Something that most people don’t think about is deep cleaning the various surfaces in their living rooms. Your upholstered furniture should be cleaned by a professional once or twice a year to remove allergens and bacteria. Flat surfaces such as tables, shelves, and the top of the entertainment center need to be dusted at least once a month to avoid accumulation.

The biggest concern in bedrooms is laundry. Make sure to launder your sheets every week, every two weeks at the very least. Wash your pillows twice a year to remove sloughed skin and body oil build up. Make sure that your dirty laundry is stored in a basket, instead of sitting on the floor, and wash your clothing regularly. Clothing that gets especially dirty, such as gym clothing or clothing you wore todo yardwork in, should be washed immediately to prevent odors in your room.

The same as the living room, everything in your bedroom should have a place that it belongs, and should never be put left outside of that place. If your closet or dresser is overflowing, take the time to go through and get rid of some clothes so your clothing can be properly put away.

Your sink and shower need to be cleaned regularly to prevent soap cum and other build up. Take the time to rinse down the shower walls after showering, and deep clean it once a week. Wipe out any toothpaste or anything else in your sink nightly, and deep clean your sink once a week as well.

Because your bathroom tends to be wet and steamy, the tile and grout are prone to mold growth. You deep clean your tiled surfaces once a week and have your tile and grout professionally sealed once a year to keep mold out.

A quick scrub once a week with a disposable toilet scrubber can prevent your toilet from developing into a huge mess. Wash or replace your hand and bath towels every three days to prevent bacterial growth. Professionally clean the tile surfaces in your bathrooms a couple of times a year to keep them free from dirt, grime and bacteria build-up.

Of course, every home is different, and if you have kids you might find yourself cleaning much more often. Use this guide as a starting point on your way to a clean and healthy home!

Say Bye to Cat Dog Urine Smells and Stains

If you’ve ever wondered how to get rid of cat urine smells in your home or how to remove dog urine from carpet, then you’re not alone—not by a long shot. Here at Chem-Dry of Stratford, we have thousands of people ask us the same questions every year. To try to help solve this problem, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to removing unpleasant pet urine odors and stains. If you’re already prepared to dive in and get the mess cleaned up, though, we’ve got you covered. Just select one of the options below to let us know whether you’re looking for a cleaning solution so you can clean up a smaller mess yourself or whether it’s a bigger situation that requires some professional care.

Dog Urine Smells

Step #1: Diagnose the Problem

If not treated properly, the odor from pet accidents can travel through the entire home and impact your health and your happiness. The smell emitted from an accident area also often leads to repeat incidents in the same area until it is properly eliminated.

The first thing to do when determining how to get dog pee smell out of carpet (or cat pee smell—we don’t discriminate!) is to locate the source of the smell. Once you’ve found the stained area(s) ask yourself the following questions:

  • How long has the stain or odor been there?
  • Is it still wet, or has the stain set in?
  • What type of material is the stained surface made of?
  • Carpet?
  • Upholstery?
  • Wood?
  • How large is the area that needs to be treated?
  • Have you verified that this is the only problem area?

Of course, most of these questions only work under the assumption that you know where the odor is coming from. If you cannot find the source of the urine smell, then your best option is to contact a professional cleaning technician. At Chem-Dry of Stratford, we use black lights to quickly find any areas in your home that need to be treated.

Dog Urine Smells

The Science Behind Black Lights and Urine

How exactly does a black light help us to find the problem area? Urine—and cat urine more than most—contains a substance called phosphorus. When it’s in the presence of oxygen, phosphorus will glow a yellowish green. The phosphorus absorbs energy and releases it in the form of visible light. (This is true whether it is under a black light or not.) Usually, this glow is rather dim, but a black light provides additional energy, which makes the light much brighter and easier to see. Under a black light, any areas that have been exposed to urine will glow.

Step #2: Remove the stain or odor

Once you’ve located all the areas that need to be cleaned, it’s time to get rid of the stain or odor. Pet urine leaves an unsightly blemish on your carpet, often accompanied by an unpleasant odor, but it doesn’t stop there. It penetrates the fibers and contaminates, not only the carpet, but the floor underneath, as illustrated in this diagram:

Dog Urine Smells

Because of this, some carpet stains can require specialized cleaning, well beyond just a simple cleaning and treatment. As time passes without treating the affected area, the urine penetrates deeper into the floors, into the walls, and eventually, even into your home’s framework and foundation. As your pet’s urine dries, the liquid portion of the stain evaporates, but the remaining crystals become even more concentrated, leading to a stronger smell. To remove this odor, you’ll need something a step beyond just a simple cleaning.

TIPS: A Few Words of Warning Before You Begin

When you are removing a pet stain, there are some practices you should avoid. Here are a few tips to help you to avoid making the situation even worse:

TIP #1: Don’t use a steam cleaner.

While a steam cleaner might seem like the just the tool to administer a deep clean for a stubborn stain, it’s quite the opposite. When you use a steam cleaner on a pet stain, the heat can actually make the stain even more difficult, or even impossible, to remove.

Just as the name suggests, steam cleaners use extremely hot water as they clean. The heat from the steam cleaner can actually cause the stain and odor to set, making them essentially permanent.

TIP #2: Avoid using strong-smelling chemicals—especially ammonia.

When you are cleaning up a pet’s accident, be very careful about which products you use. Strong-smelling cleaners—particularly ammonia and vinegar—can turn a single accident into a recurring problem.

When pet urine degrades, bacteria break it down into uric acid, uric salts, and several other components. Eventually, it converts into ammonia. Your pets are creatures of habit, and they often mark a specific spot in which to do their business. To your pets, the smell of ammonia is basically a signal to reinforce that scent, so using ammonia is basically an invitation for them to mark the exact same spot.

TIP #3: Stay away from enzyme-based products

If you take a look at Chem-Dry of Stratford’s competitors, you’ll notice that most of them use some sort of enzyme-based product to remove pet urine odors, most of which are virtually identical to the same products you can buy over the counter.

There are a few problems with enzyme-based products, though. In order for an enzyme product to be effective, it needs to stay in contact with the source for several hours. Not just stay in contact but also stay wet in order for the enzymes to be effective. This requires some constant watching and frequent re-application. Enzymes are also fragile and can be killed easily, so even after leaving the cleaner on the stain for hours, it may not have any noticeable effect.

Initial Cleanup

When you notice your pet has had an accident on your carpet or floor, the very first step to take is to gather paper towels and blot. Try to soak up as much of the urine as possible to keep the stain from spreading and soaking in further. Not only will this help you to keep the area that needs to be treated small, but it will make it easier for the odor remover to do its job later.

Once you have cleaned up the initial mess, take a closer look and identify just how big the problem area that will require deeper cleaning is.

For Smaller Areas and Recent Stains

If the mess is small and hasn’t had the chance to set too deeply, we recommend using our Pet Odor Extinguisher. This is a small piece of the same process our technicians use when they come to perform a larger-scale cleaning. It is designed to lift fresh odors from your carpet and neutralize them without the use of harsh solvents or bleaches that could damage your carpet or leave dirt-attracting residues. It’s also safe to use around pets and children.

For Large Stains, or Particularly Pungent Odors

If the stain covers a wide area, has had time to set in, or smells particularly strong, you should consult with one of Chem-Dry’s professional technicians. Once the urine has been given a chance to soak into the carpet, it can go deeper, permeating the padding and backing, or even into the sub floor. There’s only so much that you can do with a spot clean, and Chem-Dry’s professionals are trained to do more than just remove the urine from the face of the carpet. Chem-Dry of Stratford has been doing this for a long time, and our technicians know very well how to get urine smell out of carpet. They can go deeper and eliminate the bacteria that produce the odors.

When our technicians arrive, they will use special UV glasses and black lights to make sure that they don’t miss any spots that may not be visible to the naked eye. It can take up to five years for dog or cat urine to decompose on their own, but our Pet Urine Removal Treatment (P.U.R.T.) accelerates the process and completes it in a fraction of that time, reducing what would take years to a matter of hours. Our P.U.R.T. process has been tested and proven to remove 99.2% of bacteria from pet urine in carpets, as well as 99.9% of pet urine odors from carpets which is why we think it’s the best carpet cleaning for pet urine.

Every technician at Chem-Dry of Stratford is trained to provide amazing results for our customers using the proper methods for every type of surface.

Our technicians execute a 6-point process for tile cleaning that’s effective and efficient.

Our Tile Cleaning Service:

Inspection: The first step in our tile cleaning process requires our technician to test the surface of your floor so he can identify the type of stone or tile and ensure he utilizes the proper equipment and solutions.

Different cleaning techniques and solutions are used for acid-sensitive stone surfaces such as terrazzo, marble, limestone and travertine.

Preparation: Once the technician has determined the tile and stone and examined its current condition, he will tape off the area to prevent any of the cleaning solutions from reaching surrounding flooring.

Execution: Our technician will then displace dirt and loose soil from the top surface area in order to better reach embedded bacteria and grime.

Deep cleaning follows and includes several mid-process inspections and checks for superior results and service adjustments if needed.

It is possible that the initial attempt to clean the tile or stone will not succeed in which case the technician will reevaluate and start over to deliver on our promise of cleaner, healthier flooring.

Sanitizer: Throughout the tile cleaning service, the technician applies sanitizer in order to purge bacteria and kill germs deep in the tile. This is where the healthy results come from!

Sealant: After the cleaning and sanitizing process is complete, the technician applies a sealant that forms a “shield” over your floor to stagnate future build-up and penetration of bacteria.

Polish: For the final step in our tile cleaning process, our technician polishes the floor to create a beautiful shine as if your floor were brand new!

Hot Carbonation Cleaning Extraction

The Carbonating Secret Revealed

The secret to Chem-Dry of Stratford‘s unique clean is in the millions of tiny, carbonating cleaning bubbles in our cleaner we call The Natural. The carbonating solutions penetrate deep into the base of the carpet, literally banishing the dirt and grime off of the fiber’s surface. Then, we use a rejuvenating hot water extraction process to lift the dirty particles to the surface where they are quickly whisked away.

This concept is similar to the original idea of using club soda to remove a stain from a favorite article of clothing. The awesome cleaning power of carbonating solutions creates a powerful reaction that deep cleans carpets and upholstery in a gentle, yet effective way.

Carpets That Stay Cleaner Longer

Due to the natural power of carbonation, Chem-Dry of Stratford does not have to use excessive amounts of moisture to clean your valuable carpets or upholstered items. With the power of carbonation, the tiny bubbles do the bulk of the work for us which means Chem-Dry of Stratford does not need to use soapy cleaning chemicals that other carpet cleaners or do-it-yourself machines tend to rely on so much. Soapy residues will attract more dirt and will cause your carpets to get dirty again much more quickly than before.

carbonation cleaning

Chem-Dry’s primary carpet cleaner contains no soaps, detergents, or surfactants. You save money the longer your carpet stays clean, since fewer, but more effective cleanings means a better value for you and one less thing you need to worry about.

Reappearing Carpet Stains? No Problem with Chem-Dry of Stratford.

Carpet stains tend to reappear in the same place on your carpets after cleaning them for two reasons. First, they were likely never thoroughly removed to begin with. Often times, the damaging materials are forced down deep below the surface of the carpet by a high pressure steam cleaning unit, only to resurface again as the carpet dries. Secondly, the cleaning solutions used by many steam cleaners create a sticky residue that will attract more dirt and grime to the already affected area of your floors.

With the use of Chem-Dry’s carbonated carpet cleaning solution, Chem-Dry of Stratford technicians can thoroughly remove spots and stains quickly and efficiently with the power of carbonation. We apply our solutions so sparingly, and without high pressure, that the resurfacing of stains is typically not a problem. However, if a spot does reappear, then count on the power of carbonation experts at Chem-Dry of Stratford to return to work on the stain until you are completely satisfied with the results.

Does Tile & Grout Cleaning Work?

Tile Cleaning

Trained Tile & Grout Cleaners

If you want the best tile & grout cleaning DuPage County has to offer, you have come to the right place! We’re sure that several rooms in your home have tile in them. Tile can seem easy to clean by just sweeping and mopping it occasionally. However, tile requires a more in-depth cleaning every so often to prevent bacteria, grime, and other dirt build-up. If your grout is discolored, you’re experiencing this. You could get down on your hands and knees and scrub all of your tile floors clean, but you likely won’t get as good of a result as you would get from a professional cleaner. And your knees will be aching after a few minutes!

That’s why you need Chem-Dry of Stratford’s trained tile cleaning technicians. You can trust that our innovative equipment, cleaning products and cleaning experts will make your tile look as good as it did when it was first installed. Let us save you the time and hassle involved in cleaning tile and grout the way it deserves to be cleaned. We are proud to provide West Chicago with our top quality tile and grout cleaning services.

Drier, Cleaner, Healthier Tile Cleaning

The tiled rooms in your house are some of the most important, we get that!  We work hard to ensure that our services cause the least amount of disruption to your busy schedule and home life while still getting the most effective clean.
